b. 1998 Lisbon, Portugal
Tiz Leão explores the intersection between memory, emotion and gesture through painting, drawing and visual storytelling. Her practice is rooted in early, often indistinct memories, where landscape becomes a space to process and extend the past into the present. Resisting nostalgia, works become physical spaces for the contemplation of childhood, allowing for previously unnamed or immeasurable experiences to make themselves known with unmediated intensity.
Working primarily with self-portraiture and intuitive image-making, Beatriz draws from a personal archive of found objects, photographs and fragments from the natural world. Her visual language is shaped by sensitivity to gesture and rhythm, favouring immediacy over realism. A recurring theme in her recent work is the animal-like quality of human expression, explored through studies of her own face and the collective behaviours of animals — particularly rabbits.
Tiz works across media including charcoal, pastel, watercolour and oil paint, which she favours for its intensity and physicality. Her images often emerge from a single gesture or emotional impulse, developing organically into complex, layered compositions.
Alongside her visual arts practice, Tiz Leão also works in design. Her approach in this field remains intuitive and image-led, yet responds playfully to the constraints of each briefing. Whether working on editorial design, illustration or visual identity, she brings the same attention to rhythm, emotion and storytelling.
